10th Spring Semester:
English hasn't been my favorite subject of all times, but I enjoyed being in Mrs. Rohan's class because she has a different form of teaching and makes strong connection with her students. Out of all the units we did, I feel that short stories had a bigger impact on my learning and personal philosophy because each story had hidden messages that could relate to today's events. One short story in particular called: "Midnight Snack" written by Diane Duane seem like any short story; a tale about two kids exploring the subsways looking for unicorns in the middle of the night. They eventually found the unicorns: cold, hungry, but friendly with a little scaredness. The two ten year olds were curious about the mythical creatures, they nourish the creatures and went back home. When analyzing the short story my class and I thought of something that we wouldn't think the message would be like. “What if the unicorns represent homeless people out in the streets of the city?” “The kids could represent people who help out the homeless.” Those thoughts opened my eyes and realized how stories can have a connection to what is going on in today’s streets. Reading the first time I just imagined what the story described, and didn't think much of it. The second time it made more sense because I could imagine actual people instead of fictional creatures. I find it really interesting how a story can reveal many messages that could relate to today’s society and how my teacher helped us understand that a story isn't just a story is, it could be something more.
10th Fall Semester:
My global studies class isn’t like the typical class where you take notes and do something boring. Mr. Richards makes the class entertaining and has a different style compared to other teachers. Right now we’re learning about the significance world of philosophy and how can it contribute to our lives. We first learned about the enlightenment thinkers like Newton, Aristotle , and many more. Then we digged in deeper into the meaning of philosophy and had some crucial examples. One scenario that really stood out to me was: “What would you do if a child is strapped to a bomb and goes to a military camp; would you shoot him and save the military who’s trying to save the country or get killed?” This question made me think a lot but also got me dumbfounded because it’s a hard decision. After thinking deeply about that topic, we had to develop our own philosophy and what it means to us. “Vida es vida”(life is life) is my philosophy and it means that even if you’re happy or sad you’ll come across obstacles but eventually get over it and continue with life. This saying can relate to anyone and contribute in any kind of situations. All in all I like this class and it’s changing my way of thinking academically and personally.
9th Spring Semester:
Reflecting upon my first year of high school as a students there's been my ups and down, but overall it's been a stunning year. As a student I know being lazy wont get me anywhere but bad grades and I realized that this occurs to me because I want to be done with school just to be under the summer’s sun. Fall semester I worked really hard to maintain my grades at a decent level, but 2017 came with a sparkle of laziness. To be accurate, everything will be reflected upon my grades. Although I’m not suppose to be like that with school I know i should be more productive. Some challenges I faced the most was science and math. Those subjects aren’t really “understandable” for me because of the vocabulary and the different equations I have to memorize. On the other hand, I enhanced a new level learning in Global Studies and English, since the teachers varied many subjects. My goals I have for next year include: take more notes in class, not to procrastinate, and have school before anything else. I acknowledge that using thse methods will help me get where I want to be. All in all this Freshman year went in a blink of an eye and I’m excited to see what Sophomore has in store for me.
9th Fall Semester:
Ever since I started attending Windsor High school, everything changed(speaking academically). Meeting new teachers, students, and being in a different environment has been an amazing experience so far.
A class in particular has taught me so many interesting subjects, which I’ve never heard of. Global Studies has taught be about climate change, the Soviet Union, agriculture in Asia, etc. . The most appealing lesson was about the China’s agriculture because it had content which I never thought about before. China is known for having the largest population of the world with 1.4 billion people. It appears that China has a crisis with their agriculture and water, affecting many of its people. Their water is now one of biggest concerns because most of the waters are polluted, containing dead animals, chemicals, trash, and more. What’s more horrific is that only 3% of their waters are drinkable, while 4% is polluted. Because of the waters, it has been affecting farmers, low incomes for fishermen, and less food. Since most of China’s arable lands are being urbanized, it’s been affecting most of the agriculture, meaning less food. It’s possible that China won’t be able to feed its people in 2050 due to the lack of water and food.
The last 4 months have been fascinating with some challenges here and there, but I’ll continue working hard.
